General Plenary (GP) & Sub-Commission (SC) SessionsSub-Commission (SC) SessionsSC1: Time-scale calibration Brad CRAMER, Mark SCHMITZ, Anne-Christine DA SILVA
SC2: The Anthropocene: stratigraphical concepts and evidence Colin WATERS, Simon TURNER, Jan ZALASIEWICZ, Martin HEAD
SC3: Developments in Quaternary chronostratigraphy Martin HEAD, Adele BERTINI, Liping ZHOU, Jan ZALASIEWICZ
SC4: SNS Neogene stratigraphy and paleoceanography Kenneth G. MILLER, Elena TURCO, Marie-Pierre AUBRY We invite contributions to our understanding of Neogene (Miocene and Pliocene; 23-5.3 Ma) stratigraphy and paleoceanography. We will invite two keynote presentations: 1) Frits Hilgen on development of Neogene astronomical chronology; and 2) Antonio Caruso on the N/Q boundary focusing on the Gella section and its global correlation. We seek contributions to the fundamental operation of the Earth’s global climate and ocean system during the Miocene and Pliocene, and especially those focusing on past climate optima (Miocene Climate Optimum; Pliocene Climate Optimum) as harbingers of future climate change.
SC5: Advances in Paleogene research Laia ALEGRET, Aitor PAYROS, Claudia AGNINI
SC6: Integrated stratigraphy and GSSPs of the Cretaceous System Maria Rose PETRIZZO, Mathieu MARTINEZ, Jacek GRABOWSKI, Silke VOIGT, Bradley SAGEMAN, Andy GALE
SC7: Cretaceous palaeoceanography, palaeogeography, biota, climate change and critical events Michael WAGREICH, Ian JARVIS, Takashi HASEGAWA, Brian HUBER, Markus WILMSEN
SC8: The Jurassic: events, correlation and timescale Angela COE, Gregory PIENKOWSKI, David KEMP, Emanuela MATTIOLI This session will focus on two themes within the Jurassic. First, perturbations to the global carbon cycle, including the extreme conditions of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, and the implications of these events for understanding present day climate change. Secondly, the Jurassic timescale and global correlation. We particularly welcome presentations on the remaining GSSPs (Callovian, Oxfordian and Tithonian) together with results from studies that span marine to non-marine deposits and research from Jurassic sections in the world that have not received much attention to date.
SC9: Triassic integrated stratigraphy, GSSPs, and extreme climatic, environmental and biotic events Zhong-Qiang CHEN, Wolfram M. KURSCHNER, Yadong SUN, Marco BALINI The Triassic is the critical period for the evolution of Earth life and environment, and this period is bound by two mass extinctions that coincide with volatile volcanisms. The period-base great dying destroyed severely marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Life, however, recovered eventually and radiated successfully in sea and on land during the Middle Triassic after suffering the Early Triassic anoxia/high temperature double whammy. The relatively stable ecosystems were disrupted by a strong humid episode known as the Carnian Pluvial Event (CPE), and the post-crisis ecosystems gave birth to several important Mesozoic lineages, including early dinosaurs and mammals on land and calcareous nannoplankton and scleractinian corals in sea. The Triassic integrated stratigraphy provides precise time scales for determining evolutionary sequences of these extreme events. However, the GSSPs for bases of four stages (Olenekian, Anisian, Norian, Rhaetian) within this system still remains unratified. Thus, the worldwide integrated stratigraphical works are essential and progresses on these issues need to be timely updated. The proposed STS session provides a forum for new researches on Triassic time-scale frameworks calibrated in a high resolution bio-, magneto- and cyclo-stratigraphic context within the period, and their relationships to extreme climatic and environmental crises and biotic responses to these forcings.
SC10: Correlation of glacial events and extinctions: the Permian and beyond Lucia ANGIOLINI, Mike STEPHENSON
SC11: Stratigraphy of the Carboniferous world Markus ARETZ, Svetlana NIKOLAEVA, Xiangdong WANG All kind of contributions to the stratigraphy of the Carboniferous are welcome. Especially welcomed are contributions with a focus on regional to global correlation, and new stratigraphic methods.

SC16: Tonian to Cryogenian stratigraphy, palaeobiology and Earth system change Maoyan ZHU, Graham SHIELDS
SC17: The Early Precambrian: a chronology of invisible time Nora NOFFKE, Frances WESTALL ---------------------------------------------- General Plenary (GP) Sessions GP1: Advances in cyclostratigraphy – reconstructing geological time, palaeoclimate, and the Solar and Earth-Moon systems
GP2: From rock to time: evolutionary lineages and the calibration of the Chronostratigraphic Scale Annalisa FERRETTI, Marco BALINI, Thomas SERVAIS The Chronostratigraphic Scale has been under construction for more than 200 years. By the integration of multidisciplinary high-resolution studies, and the correlation of pervasive markers, the chart has evolved through times aiming to follow a global process of standardization. However, what we see is the result of different subcommissions specifically focused on the different systems of the Phanerozoic. As such, specialists of definite temporal frames hardly go beyond their time slice. The proposed session aims to bring together apparently unrelated diverse lines of investigation on diverse fossil groups of different time frames in order to define, discuss, combine and compare through a long time slice the potential of evolutionary lineages in the fine tuning of the Chronostratigraphic Scale. The general session title is intended to be broadly interpreted by researchers on evolutionary biology, biostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy to contribute to an integrated understanding of the geological time. Our intention is to publish a collection of papers resulting from the proposed session as a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal with a high impact factor. We hope that such a high-profile session will culminate by uniting researchers with various backgrounds and that the resultant publication will provide the necessary impetus to continue or embark on new research and to encourage future collaborations among colleagues.
