Kimmeridgian/Tithonian succession of the Boulonnais area (North of France)

The Kimmeridgian/Tithonian succession of the Boulonnais is very well-exposed along coastal cliffs from the South of Boulogne/mer to the “Cap Gris-Nez”. This succession is coeval with the well-known Kimmeridge Clay Formation outcropping in Dorset (Southwest UK), but here, sediments were deposited in more proximal environments close to the London-Brabant massif and show facies ranging from upper-shoreface sandstones to lower offshore organic matter-rich laminated clays. The great variability of facies indicates significant fluctuations of the water depth, either triggered by tectonics and/or sea level changes. The first stop will be at the Pointe de la Crèche where it is possible to have an overview of the entire succession from Boulogne/mer to Wimereux, from the mutabilis ammonite Zone to the kerberus Zone and the overlying Purbeckian facies. The second stop will be at Audresselles where exceptionally preserved facies from the “Grès de Châtillon” and the “Argile de Châtillon” with the Kimmeridgian/Tithonian boundary can be easily observed. The third stop will be at the Pointe aux Oies, to observe the upper part of the succession including the Purbeckian facies with unusual structures interpreted as a tsunami deposit, and the topmost succession composed of metric-scale stromatolites.

Weather/Requirements: Weather is usually good in July with temperatures around 20-22oC. Rain is possible and a warm coat may be necessary at some exposed sites. Walking boots or walking shoes essential. All sites are easily accessible along the coast.
