Classical Mesozoic (Cretaceous) successions of the Vocontian Basin (SE France), containing several GSSPs

This three-day field trip will be dedicated to the classical Mesozoic successions of the Vocontian Basin (SE France), containing several GSSPs, which have been already ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences or are under study by dedicated working groups. The sedimentary successions of SE France expose thick and well-exposed marl-limestone alternations, some of them displaying a cyclical pattern. The ammonite record is overall abundant and diverse. 

Schedule: Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th July2023

  • Day 1 July 6th: Departure from the University Lyon 1, Villeurbanne Campus La Doua (tramway T1 or T4) in the morning for a three complete days excursion, including 2 nights in an 'auberge'.
  • Day 3 July 8th: Return to Lyon in the afternoon.

Transportation:

  • In 1 or 2 vans from and to Lyon, two nights of accomodation, transport, all meals, field-guides included.

Wheater requirements: Weather is usually nice and warm in SE France in July, temperatures can attain 30 °C or more, rain is unusual. All localities are of quite easy access, but attendees have to be equipped with trekking shoes and long trousers in order to walk over small distances in the field.
