The Belgian classics of the Upper Palaeozoic

This three-day field trip will be dedicated to the classical succession of the Namur–Dinant Basin of South Belgium where the Middle Devonian and Carboniferous rocks display a large range of siliciclastic and carbonate facies. The Namur–Dinant Basin is also a classical area for the study of the Palaeozoic geology and palaeontology as several stages (Givetian, Frasnian, Famennian, Tournaisian, Viséan), which are recognized by the International Union of Geological Sciences, were originally defined there. Classical localities such as Dinant, Couvin and Namur will also be visited.

Schedule:  Friday 14th to Sunday 16th July 2023

  • Day 1 July 14thDeparture from Lille in the morning and visit of sections showing various Devonian and Carboniferous facies, including Frasnian and Tournaisian (Waulsortian) mounds.
  • Day 2 July 15thN–S transect within the Middle Devonian–Viséan succession of the eastern part of the Dinant Synclinorium.
  • Day 3 July 16thTournaisian–Serpukhovian (Namurian) carbonate and siliciclastic facies of the Dinant Synclinorium and of the Namur Parautochthon. Back to Lille in the afternoon.

Transportation:

  • In 1 or 2 vans from and to Lille.
  • Participants are asked to meet at Lille for a departure in the morning on Friday 14th.
  • The trip will end again at Lille in the evening of July 16th.

Participant fees:

  • Cost: 550 €
  • Included: Two nights of accommodation in a 3* hotel, transport, all meals, field-guides.
  • Number of participants: Min/Max: 8 / 14

Weather requirements: Weather is usually nice and warm in Belgium in July, temperatures can attain 30 °C or more, rain possible. All localities are of quite easy access, but attendees must be equipped with trekking shoes in order to walk over small distances in the field. Long trousers are compulsory in active quarry.
