British classics: Hutton’s Unconformity, Palaeozoic of Northumberland & Jurassic of Yorkshire Coast, UK

This four-day field trip will cover a wide range of ‘British classical’ stratigraphy centred around NE England and SE Scotland. The World Famous Hutton’s Unconformity at Siccar Point, SE Scotland will be visited where Siliurian turbidites are unconformably overlain by Devonian redbeds; Carboniferous stratigraphy and cyclothems of the Northumberland and the County Durham coal fields will be appraised and how the stratigraphy is being used for guiding geothermal heat extraction in the former coal mines; the Permian clastics and carbonate successions of County Durham will provide insight to the transition from  large aeolian dunes to Tethyan transgressive carbonates and evaporites and how the importance of Permian stratigraphy is being used for energy storage and CO2 sequestration projects and finally; the shallow marine clastic successions of North Yorkshire and the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Pliensbachian Stage (Lower Jurassic) will be visited along with other clastic shallow marine Jurassic strata of North Yorkshire.

Schedule: Wednesday 5th July to Sunday 9th July 2023

  • Day 1 Wednesday 5th JulyFrom Newcastle airport or central train station at c. 09.00.  Jurassic stratigraphy of the North Yorkshire coastal sections.
  • Day 2 Thursday 6th JulyDay spent looking at Lower Carboniferous cyclothems and regional stratigraphy of the Northumberland basin.
  • Day 3 Friday 7th July - Hutton’s Unconformity at Siccar Point and Burnmouth Devonian and Carboniferous stratigraphy.
  • Day 4 Saturday 8th July - Upper Carboniferous coal measures of the Northumberland and County Durham coal fields and Permian stratigraphy.
  • Day 5 Sunday 9th July – Return to Newcastle airport or Newcastle train station early morning.

  • 9-seater people carriers /minibus from Newcastle airport or Central Station and return.
  • Point of departure: Newcastle airport and/or Newcastle central train station

Participant fees:

  • Cost: £490  (to be paid to the organizers directly, please, contact the organizers)
  • Inluded: Transport from Newcastle for the entire trip, four nights hotel accommodation, breakfast and dinner only, dinner at Alnwick Castle treehouse, field guides.
  • Not included: Lunches; any rail or airfares to and from the collection and drop off-point of the field trip.

Weather/Requirements: Weather is usually good in Northumberland and North Yorkshire in July with temperatures around 20-22oC. Rain is possible and a warm coat may be necessary at some exposed sites. Walking boots or walking shoes essential. All sites are easily accessible along well-made gravel paths.

Accommodation: Hotel accommodation in Northumberland for four nights, in twin bedded room (single occupancy at extra cost, TBC).

Field guide: A detailed field guide will be provided for the trip.
